The EU Battery Passport (2027)

The EU battery passport is the first mandatory Digital Product Passport, effective 18 February 2027, under the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. If you manufacture, import, or sell in-scope batteries on the EU market, you must attach a machine-readable digital record to every battery before that date.

What is the EU battery passport?

The EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 introduced the battery passport as a mandatory data record linked to each battery via a QR code. It gives regulators, recyclers, and end customers access to critical information about the battery's origin, chemistry, carbon footprint, and end-of-life handling — all in a structured, machine-readable format.

The battery passport is the first product category to receive a mandatory DPP obligation under EU law, predating the broader ESPR framework's delegated acts for textiles and other goods.

Who must comply?

The 18 February 2027 battery passport requirement applies to batteries in three categories:

  • EV batteries — traction batteries used in electric vehicles
  • Light-means-of-transport (LMT) batteries — e.g. e-bikes, e-scooters, light electric vehicles
  • Industrial batteries with capacity above 2 kWh — stationary storage, forklifts, and similar industrial applications

Portable and consumer batteries are excluded from the 18 February 2027 scope. If your business only handles AA cells, phone batteries, or similar portable formats, this deadline does not yet apply to you — though future delegated acts may extend DPP requirements to those categories.

The obligation falls on the economic operator placing the battery on the EU market — typically the manufacturer or, for imported batteries, the importer. US and UK brands exporting in-scope batteries to the EU are directly affected.

Note: The 2026 EU Omnibus I package delayed battery due-diligence obligations (supply-chain audits) to 18 August 2027. The battery passport date of 18 February 2027 is unchanged by the Omnibus.

Batteries are also the first DPP category to become mandatory. The textile DPP delegated act has not yet been finalised; enforcement is realistically expected late 2028 to mid-2029 — well after the battery deadline.

What data does the battery passport require?

The battery passport must capture and make accessible the following data themes via the QR data carrier:

  • Chemistry and composition — materials, hazardous substances, cell chemistry
  • Carbon footprint — lifecycle CO₂e per kWh, manufacturing location, footprint declaration class
  • Recycled content — percentages of recovered cobalt, lithium, nickel, and lead
  • Supply-chain due diligence — responsible sourcing policies and audit results
  • Performance and durability — capacity, state of health, expected lifecycle, warranty
  • Dismantling and recycling information — component maps, safety instructions, disassembly procedures

All data must be accessible via a QR code (ISO/IEC 18004) combined with a unique product identifier (ISO/IEC 15459). GS1 Digital Link is the industry-consensus implementation, though the regulation is technology-neutral — any approach that meets the ISO standards is permitted.

How to prepare

With the 18 February 2027 deadline approaching, here are the practical steps to take now:

  1. Confirm scope — determine whether your batteries are EV, LMT, or industrial with capacity above 2 kWh.
  2. Audit your data — map what chemistry, carbon footprint, recycled content, and supply-chain data you currently hold and what gaps exist.
  3. Engage suppliers — request material declarations, carbon footprint reports, and recycled-content certificates from component and cell suppliers.

  5. Register with the EU DPP registry — the EU registry (expected launch July 2026) resolves unique battery IDs to your passport URL; your platform must integrate with it.
